Working From Home Insights from the Pros

Working From Home Insights from the ProsWorking From Home Insights from the ProsAdvances in technology have allowed mora and more people to do their jobs remotely. According the U.S. Census, 4.2 million more people worked from home at least one day per week in 2010 than in 1997. Broadband Internet, Skype, instant messaging, and of course the reliable telephone make working from home a reality for millions of people every day. We talked to six individuals who work from home to learn more about the benefits and challenges of working from home (WFH). Heres who they are and what they had to say Erika Hilgaertner, Deal Operations Supervisor, Savings.com was hired as a remote employee. Meghan Heffernan, PR Communications Executive, Savings.com transitioned to work-from-home after several years on the job Erica Roberts, Sr. Manager Training Development, USG Corporation manages a distributed gruppe while working from home.Jeff Kellem, Founder / Type Designer, Slanted Hall left a corporat e job to start his own company from home. Sherman Tam, Sr. Channel Marketing Manager at Tegile Systems was hired as a remote employee. Lisa K., Executive Communications Manager at a global data storage company transitioned to working from home after several years at her previous company. At her current company, she was hired as a remote employee. Working From Home Increases Productivity I get a hr of work done. I am, for the most part, always a moments notice away from time sensitive emails, etc. Erika H. I get a lot done from home, especially meaty projects and plans. Meghan H. Almost from day one I found that the lines between work hours and home hours began to blur, with the company being the primary beneficiary. In the work I do, peace and quiet helps. Lisa K. Employees Love the Work-Life Balance I am able to have both a job that I love, and do whats best for my family. I had twin boys and moved closer to my moms house for the extra help. Meghan H Because I have more flexibilit y I have more time with my family which means better work-life balance, and that aids in my overall productivity and happiness with my position. Erika H. Having more flexibility to work things in like taking the dog for a walk or running a load of laundry is really positive. Those are small things, but meaningful. I was also able to work remotely from Santa Barbara for two months rather than my home in Northern California while my husband was on a job down there. Lisa K. The overall benefit to my life is less about working from home and more about choosing to work in areas that energize me and provide joy. Jeff K. Overcoming the Challenges of Remote Communication It took some time to figure out how to be present, without being present. It can difficult when I am the only one not in the room for a meeting. I believe brainstorming and planning sessions are best done in person. When thats not possible, its my responsibility to make sure that I can contribute in a significant way desp ite not being in the bro. Meghan H. I make a conscious effort to talk to my direct reports every day, not just communicate via IM or email. I also make sure we dont just talk about work. In the office, you get to know about peoples families around the water cooler. I try to make sure we still talk about who we are as people. It makes it easier to work together. Erica R. It takes longer to build relationships. It can also be hard to track people down for information or deadlines. Sherman T. The challenge is not having a team in immediate proximity to discuss ideas. Jeff K. I try to manage my schedule so that the days I am in the office I set up a lot of in person and one-on-one meetings to stay connected. It does mean that I miss out on some of the socializing and work events like Tuesday lunches, after work running groups, and the Office Olympics. I try to plan my time in the office for some of those events as well. Meghan H. The difference for WFH employees is that we cannot s ee each others non-verbal cues. They cannot see my face to know I am joking about something or that I am serious and concerned about an issue. Oddly enough, the emoji symbols really help with joking. The recipient immediately understands your intention and can take it the right way. I also find myself stating my intention to ensure proper understanding. Erica R. Its not easy to be the only person in a staff meeting of 6-10 people who is on the phone. I would say I havent completely cracked the code on the best way to make it work. There are some tricks that help have a buddy in the room to chat with on IM (you can feed questions to them, sometimes get a better read of the room if things are tense) I have a phone that when I take it off mute it beeps. This wasnt deliberate on my part, but I noticed that many of the teams that I work with on a daily basis recognize that beep as me coming off mute and looking for an opening to make a comment. Its also critical to establish individual relationships with people outside of the team meetings, otherwise you can get marginalized. Lisa K. Overall, The Company Benefits Im very appreciative that my company was so understanding of my family needs that it motivates me to really do my best and deliver as a way of thanking them. Meghan H. I have found that it is easier for WFH employees to be more committed to a project or the company, because the company is able to offer them flexibility that could not exist if they worked in the office. I have also found that it is easier for WFH employees to meet deadlines because of this flexibility. Working from home allows them to find a healthy balance that is reflected in their work. Erica R. I believe theres value in trusting your employees to get work done and allowing them the time and focus that can come from working in a space with limited interruption. Jeff K. I get more work done, am a happier employee and less stressed out about work. Sherman T. I wouldnt be at my company if I wasnt a remote employee. Lisa K. Working from home is becoming an increasingly popular option that benefits not only employees and their families, but the their employers as well. How to Become a Criminal Profiler

How to Become a Criminal ProfilerHow to Become a Criminal ProfilerOne of the most fascinating, challenging and interesting careers available to criminal justice and criminology job seekers is that of the criminal profiler. Popularized by television shows like The Profiler and characters like Hannibal Lecter, the idea of tracking criminals by studying their motives and methods to develop a picture of who they are is understandably appealing to a lot of people. Add to that the potential for a high salary and decent fringe benefits, and its little wonder that so many people hoping for a criminal justice job would be drawn to criminal profiling. With this high interest, though, comes high competition. Landing a career as a criminal profiler is no easy feat, and there are a lot of folks competing for not a lot of jobs. If youre interested in working in such a highly sought-after and wildly competitive field, youre going to need to know how to become a criminal profiler and abflug planning for your career path now. Minimum Requirements Before you get started on getting competitive, you need to make sure you can meet the minimum requirements. These are the basics that youll need to have to get an employer even to consider an application for a job. Understand that you are most likely not going to walk out of college and right into a lucrative profiling career. Most often, criminal profilers are detectives or investigators who work for state assekuranzpolice agencies, large municipal police departments, or as FBI special agents. It means the typical path to becoming a profiler is through the police department or state or Federal Bureau of Investigations. It also means that youre going to have to start off your career at the bottom rung of the ladder and work your way up. The first step, then, is to meet the minimum hiring requirements for an officer at whatever law enforcement agency youre hoping to work for. Specific requirements will vary among agencies, but gener ally, in the U.S. you must first Be a United States citizenHave either some college, prior law enforcement or past military experienceBe at least 19 or 21 years of age - depending on the jurisdictionHold a valid driver licenseHave no prior arrests or convictions for felonies or serious misdemeanors Again, these are the bare minimums just to be considered for law enforcement. Without these, you probably wont be able to get hired as a police officer, which in turn means you wont be able to become a criminal profiler. Meeting these minimums, however, in no way guarantees youll land a job. You still have to make yourself competitive. For more specific information on how to get started on the career path, read Please note not all departments have behavioral science or profiling divisions. Research your local and federal agencies to be sure the career path you want is a viable one. Get Competitive As weve mentioned, becoming a criminal profiler is an extremely competitive endeavor. Th at means you need to stand out from the crowd and make yourself the best and most obvious candidate when a position comes available. To put yourself in the best position to make it as a criminal profiler, youll want to build a resume that demonstrates that you have the knowledge, experience, and training necessary for this mentally grueling career. Theres no specific degree required, but if you want to have a good shot, youll want to pursue an advanced degree in a behavioral science, such as psychology, and take courses in forensic science. Relevant experience is also a vital key to becoming a profiler. Youll need to work your way up through the ranks to become a detective or investigator or - in the case of the FBI - a supervisory special agent. As an investigator, youll need to develop years of experience successfully investigating violent crimes and studying dangerous criminals. Along the way, you can probably expect to partake in oral interviews and other assessments to determin e your suitability for promotion or transfer to a profiling unit. Your past body of work should be impeccable, meaning well-written and thorough reports and successful arrests and prosecutions. Physical Fitness Requirements Because criminal profiling is a law enforcement career, you will most likely be required to demonstrate and maintain a certain level of physical fitness. If youre not in shape now, consult with your doctor and start working to get there - and stay there -so your health doesnt keep you from achieving your dream job. Different agencies will have different requirements, but if you exercise regularly and eat healthily, you can put yourself in the best position possible to compete physically. Background Investigation Given the sensitive nature of the field, youll be required to undergo an extensive background check when you begin your job. By the time you get to the point in your career when you can start being considered for a job as a criminal profiler, the background check should be less of an issue. Nonetheless, whether youre just getting started or youre already well-established, its always a good idea to keep the prospect of a background check in the back of your mind and make sure your behavior - both on and off the job - is above board. Training According to the FBI - the agency that pioneered criminal profiling - in addition to their law enforcement and police academy training, criminal profilers receive professional training and development to hone their skills and prepare them for the specific job of profiling. Training is conducted by units such as the FBIs Behavioral Science Unit and the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime. Initial training will include up to 500 hours or more, and profilers are also expected to join national and international profiling organizations, as well as attend seminars and continuing education courses to stay fresh in their field. Getting Started Embarking on a career as a crim inal profiler is a difficult prospect. Its also an incredibly interesting career choice, with plenty of challenges to keep you busy and excited about your job for years to come. If youre well motivated and determined to become a criminal profiler, then theres no time like the present to get started on gaining the knowledge, training, and experience youll need to compete for this great criminal justice career.

Twitch The video game job that pays so well that people have died for it

Twitch The video game job that pays so well that people have passivd for itTwitch The video game job that pays so well that people have died for itOn February 19, Brian C. Vigneault, a 35-year-old man and father of three, welcheslive-streaming himself playing a video game onTwitch, a popular video streaming service. He had been live-streaming himself for 22 hours straight as part of a marathon to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. When Vigneault got up to take a cigarette break, he collapsed and was later found dead.Although the cause of death has not been publicly released, many members of the Twitch community thought exhaustion from thelong hours of live-streaming wasa factor. The reason This is not the first death that has occurred like this. A South Korean teenager died after an eight-hour live streaming session. A 32-year-old man in Taiwan was found dead in an internet cafeafter a 72-hour gamingbinge. The Twitch subculture of gaming addictionThese live-streaming marathoner s are not outliers. Its the bottom-line to making Twitch a business. Amazon bought Twitch in 2014 to grab devoted gamers. The service allows serious gamers to pick up followers who intently watch them play video games. The best players amass millions of followers, just as celebrities might on Facebook or Twitter. Those millions of followers pay a subscription fee for their favorite players, and receive an email notification when the players start broadcasting. The mora followers a player has on Twitch, the bigger the paycheck. Some of the most popular players, like Michael Santana, have said they make $8,000 a month or more, according to the Huffington Post. That also means the pressure to keep streaming is intense. To gain and maintain a following, Twitch demands more and more of its users time and energy to play and narrate live-streams.Twitch community guidelines ban self-destructive behavior, but it does not define live-stream marathoning as one of these behaviors. With digital jobs like Twitch fame, you gain the flexibility of being able to work whenever you want and wherever you have an internet connection. The drawback youre always on.Under this new Digital Age, because you can always be working, you start to feel that you should always be working.Thats the guilt felt byJoe Marino, who was streaming at least 7-8 hours a day, every day. When a bathroom break can stop your incomeMarino detailed his cautionary tale as a full-time Twitch user in an essay he titled Dying to Stream. At the height of his Twitch use, he says, even bathroom breaks became drawbacks.Say you busted your ass all day to get 400500 viewers and you need to go pee. What happens is people dont have long attention spans, so when you get up, you will 100% lose a portion of your audience.Livestream numbers matter when Twitch becomes your livelihood.Viewers = money. Whether it is through donations, subscriptionsor sponsorship deals, (believe me sponsors watch your numbers like a hawk), you need to keep your numbers up. This adds to the stress, Marino said.He believedstaying seated for hours at a time to maintain his following directly contributed to the emergency heart surgery he needed in 2015.The surgery was, he says, a wake-up call. Now, Marino has cut back on his Twitch jobto focus on photography and his family. But for some, the long hours arenormal. Its just like opening a store, BurkeBlack, who streams ten hours a day every day, told Kotaku as part of its feature on the pressures these career streamersface. Streamers dont know if it could be over by tomorrow. When you have no limits to how much you can work, youll need to makeyour own. Were all pioneers in this thing and trying to figure it out, Renee Reynosa said. She advises Twitch streamers to treat it like any other job, and find a work-life balance.Preparing for an emergency-room visitHolden McNeely, who is transitioning into a full-time freelancer, tells Ladders he plans to increase his Twitch use to four hours a day , 4-5 times a week, so it can become a solid source of income. As part of this, he is going to hold his first 24-hour live-streaming marathon on April 6. After hearing about the live-streaming deaths,McNeely acknowledged the deaths had himworried but that he still planned to go forward with his.McNeely does not plan to make these all-day marathons a regular habit, like two of Vigneaults friends said it was for Vigneault.Vigneaultwas a cigarette smoker. People were literally telling him on chats, like, Hey, you seem messed up. Dont worry about the stream, man. Its ok. Go get some rest, McNeely said.To prepare himself, McNeelytold Ladders that he will approach his live-streaming marathon with the pacing and moderation ofa real marathon. My fiance is going to be there the whole time. Im going to have several guests. Im going to get up once an hour to walk around. Im not going to drink energy drinks or coffee or take supplements. Im going to drink nothing but water. Im going to eat health y foods, McNeely said.He does not plan to die for content. If Im not feeling well, Im going to cut the stream. And if the worst should happen, McNeely said, The emergency room is right across the street from my building. If worst comes to worst, Im at least, right there.

Sign up & submit your question here Community Diversity Inclusion CareerGrowth One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When welches the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which f ound that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial posit ions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and indu strial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

What did you think you were g oing to do when you went to college?CarolineI wanted to be an astrophysicist. I welches very deep into sci-fi and read everything that I could about black holes and the early beginnings of string theory and multiverse theory.WhitneyWere there any particular books that you especially loved?CarolineOh, I loved Carl Sagan. The truth is that the kind of science fiction that I fruchtwein liked welches less about natural science or technology- I was much more interested in how a society evolves. If you push an assumption to a limit and take it forward into the future, how does society progress? Of course, that was perhaps a clue that I was slightly more interested in people-science than I was in natural science. So when I took a class in economics when I was sixteen, it blew my mind. I thought, Wow, you can be rigorous about human stuff The whole course of my life changed at that point.WhitneyInteresting So thats an interesting question you just posed. What happens when you take a specific assumption and start to play it out over time? Whats one of those assumptions that youve played with and played out?TrendingHow to Want What Youve Got in a World of Infinite ChoiceCarolineWell, I didnt think of myself as a risk-taker. I grew up in a modest, loving household, which meant that I didnt have that financial security that sometimes helps people be bold early in their lives and go out on their own. What I did have was a clear sense that I liked learning. The thing that has guided me throughout my life has been this question of What do I want to learn next? If I push that to the front of my mind, then Im a little braver and a little bolder in what I choose to do.The thing that has guided me throughout my life has been this question of What do I want to learn next? If I push that to the front of my mind, then Im a little braver and a little bolder in what I choose to do.WhitneyOkay, so based on that guiding question, walk us through the chronology of your career.CarolineI was a public policy economist for most of the 1990s. I enjoyed it, but realized that it was missing people, in some ways, which was my original interest in economics. So I thought, How do I get closer to that again while playing to my strengths and figuring out how to bring more joy into my professional life? I decided that management consulting would be a good way of working on organizational change and leadership, which was really what I was interested in.So then I went to McKinsey, the consulting firm. McKinsey was surprisingly willing to let me play and build a practice focused on behavioral change, so I did that for quite a while. I was there for 12 years and was a partner in the organization practice.Career number three actually started while I was still there. I was enjoying the intimate work that I was doing with leaders or their teams one-on-one. I thought I should probably get certified as a coach in order to do that properly, and after my training, I thought, This is what I was born to do.Within McKinsey, I pivoted to focusing on individual effectiveness and doing much more coaching. And then I quit, wrote a book, and became an entrepreneur. How do Iplay to my strengths while figuring out how to bring more joy into my professional life?WhitneyAmbitious people want to disrupt themselves, to do something new, but also often dont want to leave their current job. You did that really well at McKinsey. How did you get the buy-in to be able to play? Do you remember the process you went through to make that happen?CarolineAbsolutely. I joined McKinsey in 2000, which was an interesting time to move from the public sector to the private sector, because it was right after the markets had all tanked. So basically nobody was getting staffed, because there just wasnt enough work to go around. It was a very awkward, stressful situation. I just remember deciding that, instead of relying on the staffing process, I would just find out who was doing a project that sounded really cool and interesting, and I would leave them a voicemail. Not everybody replied, but many people got in touch. I suppose they were perhaps charmed by my proactive outreach, even if what I said was a bit garbled. So, I got to do very interesting work from the beginning, which was a prize, not only because it was interesting, but because I was just staffed on anything at all when a lot of my colleagues were not. That was definitely one big eye-opener- you have to be clear about what youre going after, and then be a little brave in reaching out for it.You have to be clear about what youre going after, and then be a little brave in reaching out for it.WhitneyHow did you make the decision to leave McKinsey and to write your book,How to Have a Good Day, and start on the path that youre on today?CarolineIts the same question that I started asking myself early on What do I want to learn next? At McKinsey, the big questions were about building a bigger business, which is an exciting t hing to do, but it wasnt what I was most excited about. I was doing a lot of work showing clients how to use simple insights from behavioral science to improve their professional lives. After a session, they would often ask, Can you give us a book as followup reading? I would talk to them about my most cherished behavioral science books, and they would say, No, I want the practical stuff- how you change your to-do list, how you have conversations, and so on. I thought there was an opportunity to give people something that did not yet exist, a book that people could dive into at any point, depending on what they most needed that afternoon.I considered trying to do it while I was still working at McKinsey, but I thought it might be time for a new adventure. It became clear that it was possible to have an arms-length relationship as a Senior Advisor. The best of all worlds, really- still part of the family, but with the independence to pursue my new passions. This article originally app eared on Heleo. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Looking for a long-term career Heres why clean energys a good place to start

Looking for a long-term career Heres why clean energys a good place to startLooking for a long-term career Heres why clean energys a good place to startWhat constitutes a career has changed drastically over the years. With the rise of the gig economy, especially, the days are gone where an employee would work for only a few companies over theirentire career. Gone are pensions, corporate ladders, and even the security of saving reliably for retirement. Manyprominent companiesare trying desperately to hire people as contractors and prove that they are not employees. As a result, many Americans now make their living with temporary, freelance, or part-time jobs.Over a third of Millennials, for example, report having multiple side hustles in addition to their primary jobs.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn fact, very little about the gig economy or the professional culture it has inspi red proves beneficial for workers. For one thing, the companies offering this kind of work often dont ensure that their contractors have the best training to reach their full potential. By definition, their contractors are dispensable and the companies want to commoditize them. Also, given that the contractors have to pay for their own geschftliches miteinander expenses, it feels next to impossible to do something likesaving for retirementor for your kids college tuition when you have to hit next months numbers to pay rent. But the truth is, itispossibleeven in todays professional climateto find gainful, long-term, and stable employment in America today. You might just be looking in the wrong places.Therealbest place to find a fulfilling, long-term career? The clean energy sector. Heres why.Clean energy as an industry is uniquely equipped to provide stable careers because its essentially infrastructure. The clean energy industry is, in essence, an industry rooted in infrastructure. In 2018,1 out of every 23 peoplethat found new work chose the clean energy industry. That has been true since the 2008 financial crisis.Clean energy companies today are building and installing solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. Theyre composting food and green waste, recycling, and turning waste to value. The largest employee base in the clean energy economy is making your home mora comfortable through energy efficiency. Theyre completing work thats dangerous and in which mistakes are expensive to rectify.Thats why clean energy companies want andneedto retain employees who know what theyre doing and who they can relyupon. As it happens, theyll pay good money for these kinds of employees and will commit to them long-term. Which makes sensewhy would younotwant to commit to employees by way of a stable, reliable income if youd spent a year or so training them? Youd want your workers to become more productive, smarter, and safer over 10, 20, even 30 years.Thats the prevail ing employer mindset right now in clean energy.Aside from the good wages and long-term support, clean energy jobs are dignified and dont always require direct experienceAnd those kinds of opportunities are increasingly rare in America today, especially in blue-collar or tafelgeschirr work. According toa recent reportfrom Brookings Mean hourly wages exceed national averages by 8 to 19 percent. Clean energy economy wages are also more equitable workers at lower ends of the income spectrum can earn $5 to $10 more per hour than other jobs. The clean energy sector may be the only remaining sector, in fact, where an American worker who is not an engineer or executive can obtain a $45-an-hour job with benefits. Its also one of the only sectors where you dont need direct experience to apply. Clean energy companies will take people whove just graduated with a high school diploma and train and commit to them, so long as they work hard and believe in the work. The clean energy sector is also comm itted to diversity and inclusion. There are many programs through which people who dont know someone can enter the clean energy industry. These are accessible through available certifications, orGRID alternatives, which train thousands of clean energy workers every year.To start looking for a clean energy job, tap your local vocational schoolThere youll find professionals who can both prepare you for the kind of work you want to be doingwhether thats in electricity, mechanics, or constructionas well as connect you with employers when youre ready.Another option is to begin working for a contractor. Theyll teach you the basics around installation efficiency, ventilation, or construction, for example, so that you can provide a more specific kind of value to clean energy companies when they bring you on board. The bottom line is this the clean energy sector isoverflowingwith opportunity, from renewable energy, to energy storage, to energy efficiency, to advanced vehicles and autonomous t ransportation. And its uniquely positioned to provide an opportunity that also comes withstability. Plus, tellingly, its growing.A 2017 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reportfound that the energy sector employed 6.4 million Americans and that a majority of those jobs were in renewable energy and efficiency.A career you can depend on is still obtainable. The economy of our parents generations may be a relic of the past, but the economy of the future is ours for the taking. This article first appeared on Minutes Magazine. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Cell Phone Use in Army Basic Training

Cell Phone Use in Army Basic Training Cell Phone Use in Army Basic Training Recruits are no longer required to leave behind what has become a standard part of life for most adults during the Armys  basic military training, but these boot campâ€"bound soldiers, still arent able to use their cell phones in the same ways they did as civilians. The Armys cell phone policy for recruits is pretty tough. Changes recruits can expect in day-to-day cell phone use include most training platoons allowing only voice calls, no text, video, or photo exchanges, and you wont be allowed to have your phone with you at all times as you did in civilian life. Before heading to boot camp, erase any photographs or videos which could be considered lewd or pornographic. Your cell phone may be inspected during the initial briefing, and you may be required to sign a policy agreement. Sergeants Dictate Cell Phone Use Historically, standard Army basic training rules allowed for well-performing platoons to be rewarded with phone calls home on Sundays. To take advantage of this, recruits would have to stand in line at pay phones and call using a calling card  or call collect. Phone calls were generally limited to just a few minutes to make sure everyone in the platoon had a chance to call. Recruits in many Army basic training platoons are now allowed to use personal cell phones to call friends and families, send text messages, and update their social media status. Under the new policy, cell phones are kept by the drill sergeant  (DS) and returned to recruits for a period each Sunday if the DS feels the platoon has earned the privilege. Of course, recruits who dont have cell phones are still allowed to use the old pay phones, but the time allowed to make calls is still limited for all recruits, regardless of method, to between 10 and 30 minutes. Evolving Policies for Communications From Basic Military Training One of the reasons the military is so successful is their willingness to take full advantage of new technology. Most adult members of our society carry a cell phone these days, and post-basic military recruits are generally no exception. As a result, cases of military members in Iraq and Afghanistan using personal cell phones to pass on vital military information to their commands when conventional military communication means failed are somewhat common and have very likely saved lives. Other military services may or may not allow cell phone use during their basic training programs. As communications methods evolve, so will these policies.

How to Pass Employer Screening Requirements

How to Pass Employer Screening Requirements How to Pass Employer Screening Requirements In a buyer’s market, the right certifications and credentials can make the difference between an offer and a rejection. Here are tips to determining which ones you need. Just a year ago, a job seeker might have found he had 12 out of the 14 requirements listed for a job posting and applied. He stood a good chance of obtaining an interview and even a job offer. But the faltering economy has filled the job market with candidates who possess all 14 requirements and put the onus on the job seeker to possess the credentials required for the job.In boom times, employers might list a set of certifications on a job posting more as an aspirational list than a set of firm requirements. It was icing on the cake, said Shane Cox, manager of talent acquisition at Harvard Business Publishing, who spent more than a decade in financial services before switching to publishing. But in bad economies, when there are many qualified candidates out of work, a list of certifications is one more way for overb urdened hiring managers to filter candidates who don’t fit the ideal profile.Knowing how recruiters see certifications and credentials and knowing which ones are mandated, which ones are required, which ones are just beneficial and which ones are useless can help you guide your job search or retraining strategy.Required, “required” and optionalRecruiters look at two categories of “hard certifications”: those mandated by law to perform a job and those not required by law but considered beneficial. They also consider “soft credentials,” another term for specific work experience.During this recession, Cox said, more candidates are being judged on the basis of soft credentials - those not mandated by law but considered beneficial.Little has changed in certifications required by law, she said. In financial services, for example, job descriptions list the credentials a candidate must have to perform the job legally, and that hasn’t changed, Cox said.In less-regulated indu stries, by contrast, optional certifications show dedication to continued study and the energy to move ahead, not to mention the additional knowledge or skills involved, according to Sharon Jautz, an HR consultant specializing in online and digital media. However, those certifications once considered a plus are all but required now, Cox said. What does this mean for job seekers weighing the benefits of optional certifications? Priority One is to determine which ones carry the most weight in your industry and specialty (and which are considered all but required), Jautz said. A certification is unlikely to get you onto a short list if the skills involved don’t reflect the kind of job for which you’re applying.Soft credentialsRecruiters also consider soft credentials: your level of experience in specific tasks and responsibilities. Don’t be misled by the “soft” moniker, however; demonstrating the level of experience an employer wants for a specific task is as important as hold ing a required credential or certification. But just meeting the volume of years required isn’t enough.“It’s not how long you’ve been in a job that matters, it’s what you’ve been doing there,” Cox said. Even if the titles are similar, 10 years’ experience in a job with significantly different responsibilities from the one you’re pursuing won’t hold water with discerning employers.“Employers really are looking for practical experience; they want to know not just what was accomplished by a team you were on, they want to know what you actually did besides ‘leadership,’ ” Cox said. “They want to see executives who are willing to get their hands dirty.”And being able to play just one role doesn’t cut it anymore, either.“Everyone’s had to do more with less over the last two or three years, so they can’t afford to hire someone who does strategy really well but just does strategy,” Cox said.“A lot of times, it’s the details of the project work people did that makes a difference. It’s the detail that shows what you did on a team and how effective that was,” Cox said. “When you do that in some specific detail without coming up with a 10-page resume, peopl e will pick you up very quickly.”Therefore, your resume must describe how your leadership or strategic skills set the company up for a great result, Cox said, then describe what part of the work you did yourself to make it happen.Generalists vs. specialistsIf you don’t have the time or money to invest in hard certifications, there are ways you can beef up your soft credentials while you’re on the job. Employers want to see that you have practical experience with many aspects of a position, not just that you led the team and handed off the details, Cox said.“It’s kind of unfair in some ways,” she said. “For the last 10 years, we’ve been looking for specialists; now we’re looking for people who are specialists but also have generalist skills and management skills.”Jautz said new technologies, including the Internet, have changed the way businesses work. Employers now expect senior executives to be able to work directly with a variety of digital tools.Rather than ju st outline a Web-based marketing plan on paper and hand it off to production managers, for example, a marketing executive must demonstrate enough practical understanding of design software, search-engine optimization and other technologies to guide it to completion.“You don’t have to do all of it yourself,” Jautz said, “but you have to be up on the technical skills and be able to understand how it gets done in order to do it.”

How to Empower Your Employees

How to Empower Your Employees How to Empower Your Employees Employers and employees both have unrealistic perceptions about what empowerment is and how its supposed to work in real-time. Empowerment is the process of enabling or authorizing an individual to think, behave, take action, and control work and decision-making about their job in autonomous, independent, self-directed ways. It is the state of feeling self-empowered to take control of your destiny. Empowerment in the Workplace Empowerment is feeling in control of your work environment and that you have permission to make decisions in the areas you control and are responsible for in your job. When thinking about empowerment in human relations terms, try to avoid thinking of it as something that one individual does for another. This mindset is one of the problems organizations have with the empowerment concept. People think that someone, usually the manager, has to bestow empowerment on the people who report to them. Consequently, the reporting staff members wait for the bestowing of empowerment, and the manager asks why people wont act in empowered ways. This bestowing and waiting has led to general unhappiness, mostly undeserved, with the concept of empowerment in many organizations. Dont let that happen in your organization. Your best success will result from empowered employees taking action- not waiting for permission. How to Think of Empowerment Think of empowerment, instead, as the process of an individual enabling himself to take action and control work and decision making in autonomous ways. Empowerment comes from the individual. The organization has the responsibility to create a work environment which helps foster the ability and desire of employees to act in empowered ways. The work organization has the responsibility to remove barriers that limit the ability of staff to act in empowered ways. Think, too, of empowerment as an employee philosophy and strategy that organizations benefit from adopting. Empowered employees, who are operating within an organizations strategic framework that includes mission and goals increase the productivity and effectiveness of the workplace. They are enabled to perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively without feeling as if they are waiting for a decision, waiting for direction, and waiting for permission to act. They become more responsible and accountable when self-direction is the norm. Employee involvement and participative management are often used to mean empowerment. They are not interchangeable. Each describes a different characteristic of an effective workplace. Getting Out of the Way of Employee Empowerment Empowerment is desirable management and organizational style that enables employees to practice autonomy, control their own jobs, and use their skills and abilities to benefit both their organization and themselves. The companys management style should involve sharing the goals, sharing each employees expectations and framework with the employee, and then, getting out of the way while employees were empowered to set goals, accomplish their objectives, and determine how to do their jobs. The empowered organization operates in a team-based structure in which each development team has the authority and autonomy to determine the features and capabilities of their product. They did this in conjunction with the overall technology leadership and with serious input from the marketing team. Empowerment Examples Empowerment in the workspace can take many forms as can be seen in the following examples. Releasing Control The manager of the Human Resources department added weeks to the process of hiring new employees. They required their staff members to obtain a managers signature on every document related to hiring a new employee. Consequently, documents sat on the managers desk in a pile until he had time to review them. Hiring slowed and other departments wondered if they would ever fill that vacant desk. The time problem was brought to the managers attention and the fact that their action impeded empowered behavior. The manager fostered empowerment by telling employees they no longer needed his signature unless the hire involved extraordinary circumstances or an executive position. Frankly Stating What You Need John empowered himself to discuss the career objectives he wished to pursue with his supervisor. He told his supervisor, frankly, that if the opportunities were not available in his current company, he would move on to another company. Mary took charge of her career by fueling her sense of empowerment when she developed a career path plan, met with her manager to ask for her assistance to achieve it, and set goals for its accomplishment in her performance development plan.

5 things you can do today that will make you happier

5 things you can do today that will make you happier 5 things you can do today that will make you happier Nothing feels better than happiness, whether you find it in seeing that super cute cat meme or simply by spending time with your friends. But if you’re still feeling down in the dumps despite the joys of life, keep on reading…We know how important it is to take small steps to appreciate happiness, and so we worked with top life coach  Carole Ann Rice, to reveal the five things we all can do daily to feel that little bit happier.1. Do Something KindThe lovely karmic kick-back starter pack includes but is not limited to: buying and sending flowers unexpectedly to a co-worker or loved one, sending a thank you card to someone who has never stopped supporting you, and passing on a compliment to someone. By knowing that you brightened up someone’s day, it’ll help brighten your own, too.2. Get Your Blood PumpingAs much as we may love to share those studies that suggest we can be allergic to exercise, there are many more ways to get moving than you might suspect that can be major moo d boosters. Dancing, running, swimming, even gentle strolls have a way of boosting the spirit. Try to do so without your phone or going on Airplane mode: go offline to give yourself a chance not to think, just be.3 Relish the Small ThingsIt could be a piping hot cup of coffee before work, a bath enhanced with a lavender bomb, the tweeting of the birds, or a good book to curl up and read. Learning to appreciate the little finer things in life will make it easier to see the beauty in the macro.4. Keep a Blessing BookEach day, whether after waking up or before going to bed, jot down all the things in life you’re grateful for. It could be your friends, having a roof over your head, or even your new Amazon Prime subscription. Whatever it is, itemising it will remind you daily that there are reasons to smile.5. Just Keep SmilingSimple. Smiling is contagious, and the more your smile at others, the more they can’t help but smile back. Even if you’re on the train at 8:30 am commuting t o work, that smile you crack to a passer-by might just be the thing they needed to see. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

Study finds children gain more weight during the summer months

Study finds children gain more weight during the summer months Study finds children gain more weight during the summer months Weight gain is probably more closely associated with the winter months in most people’s minds. Saying nothing of all of the holidays that close out the year, and all of the snowed in binge eating, our bodies’ fat cells actually react positively to sunlight. These cells reside closest to the skin, so when they become exposed to the blue light created by the sun they begin to shrink, which prohibits them from storing extra fat. Of course, there are other factors that govern periods of intense weight gain. As a new study posits, children have a particularly rough go at sticking to healthy diet regimens in the summer months, particularly on the weekends. Ultimately, a study period spanning more than five years, proved children gain considerably more weight during this period than they do during the winter.  Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Household food-insecurityThe study titled, Diet Quality and Fruit, Vegetable, and Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption by Household Food Insecurity among 8- to 12-Year-Old Children during the Summer Months, presents findings that contradict conventional wisdom on the subject. It should follow that freedom from school, and warm weather equals more time engaging in physical activity. While that’s true for most children, it’s not enough to combat the excess of sugary beverages and snacks that are synonymous with a balmy day off. The researchers began with a study of a group of 218 children, between the ages of eight and 12-years-old   for six years. Half of the participants were girls, 49% were non-white children, and 25% of the children came from food-insecure households.  The U.S Department of Agriculture defines a food-Insecure household as one that consistently lacks access to foods and nutrients that promote a healthy and active life. Hunger and Health reports, “It is important to know that hunger and food in security are closely related, but distinct, concepts. Hunger refers to a personal, physical sensation of discomfort, while food insecurity refers to a lack of available financial resources for food at the level of the household.”The researchers that conducted the latest study demarcated between food-insecure households and food-secure households by examining the short form of the US Household Food Security Survey. Because children have more access to snacks and sweetened beverages, spend more time staring at screens, and being generally sedentary during the summer months, the researchers behind the paper published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics implore parents to keep a vigilant eye on their children’s eating habits, in addition to setting a good example by adhering to a balanced diet themselves. The study reports,  â€œWhole fruit and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption varied by food insecurity on weekend days during summer months. Because children t end to gain weight during summer months, efforts to increase weekend access to whole fruits and promote water consumption may contribute to weight gain prevention and healthy development, especially for children from food-insecure households.”A recent study from the London School of Economics and Political Science of over 7, 574 children determined that divorce has a major influence on household food insecurity. Often during times of divorce, families have less money for fruits and vegetables and have to work longer hours which makes them unable to prepare healthy meals for their children. The children in the study group were found to be much more likely to gain weight than other children, the difference was the most profound in children that were subject to divorce under the age of six. Unfortunately, it’s considerably more expensive to adhere to a healthy diet regimen, but there are ways to consistently obtain all the important nutrients that you and your family need on a budg et; little things like buying whole foods as  opposed to more expensive processed products, avoiding name brand products, and establishing a grocery list and making sure you stick to it every week.

This is why youll try harder at age 29, 39, 49, 59 ...

This is why you'll try harder at age 29, 39, 49, 59 ... This is why you'll try harder at age 29, 39, 49, 59 ... If you are feeling a sudden burst of motivation to tackle a big goal, your age may be the cause. For his new book “When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing,” author Daniel H. Pink analyzed how people who are in the last year of a decade have more energy and motivation to accomplish extreme and difficult goals. We try harder in the last year of a decadePink cites psychological research that has found that people in the last year of a decade (or nine-enders) - people ages 29, 39, 49, 59, for example - are more motivated to take on big goals like running a marathon for the first time than at any other age. In fact, a first-time marathoner who is a nine-ender  is almost twice as likely to compete in a marathon than people at other ages.In their research, published in 2014, social psychologists Adam Alter and Hal Hershfield found that “people audit the meaningfulness of their lives as they approach a new decade in chronological age,” calling people on this yearlong search f or meaning  â€œnine-enders.” When you are taught to mark  time in decades, calling life stages “the twenties,” and “the thirties,” it makes sense that you start to plan goals around this temporal boundary.Confronted with the encroaching end of another decade of life, we start searching for meaning around us. Some of us start exercising more strenuously. Alter and Hersfield found that nine-enders are more likely to sign up for a marathon. If the nine-enders are already marathon runners, they will post a faster time in their nine-ending year than in the two years before and after that age.Nine-ender motivation is not always goodThis nine-ender phenomenon can backfire though when people assess the meaning of their lives and find it wanting. That’s when the hunt for meaning can become a destructive crisis of faith. This reflection can lead people to reassess their values. For example, the researchers found that male nine-enders were overrepresented on an extramarital affair dating site.In the most extreme crises of faith, people become more likely to take their own life. Looking at U.S. suicide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the researchers found that  the 2000-2011 suicide rate was “higher for nine-enders than among people whose ages ended in any other digit.”“When people feel their lives lack meaning in one of these domains they either respond adaptively, by adopting behaviors that increase the likelihood of finding meaning, or maladaptively, by choosing to act in ways that further rob their lives of meaning,” the researchers said.By the end of a long decade, we see the finish line, and we start assessing what we have accomplished, for better or for worse. This research shows us that time is an inescapable motivator that could be pushing us to make big decisions. We just need to take a step back to make sure they are the right ones.

Transform the (Dreaded) Annual Performance Review

Transform the (Dreaded) Annual Performance Review Transform the (Dreaded) Annual Performance Review Transform the (Dreaded) Annual Performance Review C. Fox, author of PEOPLE TOOLS FOR BUSINESS:  50 Strategies for Building Success, Creating Wealth, and Finding Happiness (SelectBooks, Inc., 2014) In the 1929 movie, The Cocoanuts, the hotel employees of a mustachioed Groucho Marx chased him from the lobby and up a flight of stairs. “We want our money,” they yelled. “What do you mean?” “We want our money,” they repeated. “I don’t understand.   You want whose money?” Groucho shouted back. “You haven’t paid us.   We want to be paid!” “Oh,” says Groucho, pointing directly at them.   “You want my money,” with emphasis on the “my.” I digress, which is not uncommon for me when I am faced with a situation I find uncomfortable. Let’s remove dreaded from the annual performance review and look at this a bit differently. Reviving the Dreaded Annual Performance Review First, why should we think of the employee performance review as being about the employee? Don’t both the employee and employer want the best possible performance? If you are an employee and don’t perform as well as you can, perhaps you lack the proper tools or training. Maybe you don’t feel appreciated and, as a result, are not as involved as you might be. I regard tools, employee training, and the expression of appreciation as the responsibility of the employer, not the employee. Second, why shouldn’t I want to encourage the best performance possible, and pay fairly for that performance? If all of my 45 or so employees felt unfairly treated and failed to show up Monday morning, my business would instantly disappear. Each of them is excellent at what they do and could easily find a position somewhere else. But how could I reconstruct, entirely by myself, the outstanding team which we have built together over the past 45 years? I now regard the (not dreaded) employee performance review as a review of my own performance, not theirs. I think of my employees as co-workers. We work in the same building, write e-mails to outsiders and to each other, talk on the telephone and enjoy lunch in early afternoon. Every one of us is a crew member on the same ship, headed in the same direction. (At Disneyland you would be called a “Cast Member,” which sounds nice but, to me seems more like acting rather than interacting with customers and each other). Today my ideal procedure on the annual employee review is: 1) Keep my co-workers up to date on how they are doing during the year. I offer approval to encourage them, though not as often as I should. I suggest course corrections to help them focus on what needs to be changed. When your flight lands in San Francisco it’s too late to remember that you should have boarded the flight for Chicago. In the old days I would say to an employee after his or her first day on the job, “I’ve decided to renew your option. You can come back tomorrow.” Today I cringe at the thought of how I would feel if my new boss of one day said that to me. Two weeks ago I hired Joy to help with the marketing and promotion of People Tools. At the end of her first week I asked, “Are all of us providing proper information and support so that you can do your best work?” If you have properly helped your co-workers during the year there will be no bad surprises for either of you at the annual review. 2) When it’s time for the annual review, I make sure to conduct it within a week or two of the anniversary date. It’s not fair to my coworkers to delay information which is important to them and keep them walking on eggshells, waiting for “the knife to drop.”   And I don’t want to skulk about the office hiding from someone. 3) Ask each person being reviewed to evaluate him or herself, to write down their accomplishments of the past year and goals for the coming year. Not only does this help your employees learn the valuable skill of self-assessment, it also shows how much you respect and appreciate their opinions. 4) Ask the reviewees what salary they think they deserve. I use recommendation as a guide. Years ago Gert, who worked with me for almost 25 years, always asked for a ten or fifteen percent raise, which was far too high. But at least I knew what she was thinking. One year Cathy, my vice president and general manager, asked for a raise which was far too small. I increased her salary by three times the amount she had requested. 5) During the review I ask how I, or other managers, can better assist our co-worker to perform better. “Replace my seven year old computer,” was one answer. I was embarrassed. I had allowed a valued member of my accounting staff to struggle for two years with entirely outdated equipment. 6) Consider awarding a member of your team a one-time bonus if theyve  made an outstanding contribution to the company that saves time and money, increases profits and productivity, or improves the working conditions in the office. This way, the annual review can be just as much about rewarding employee performance  as it is about offering constructive suggestions on how to improve. Why shouldn’t you want to encourage the best performance possible, and pay fairly for that performance? If all of your employees felt unfairly compensated and failed to show up Monday morning, your business would instantly disappear. Each of them is there because they are good at what they do, and they could always find a position somewhere else. 7) If my goal is to retain my team member for another full year, I sometimes pay part of their increased salary as a bonus at their next anniversary date. We all like something “extra,” and often a $2,000 bonus looms larger than $166.67 a month, before payroll taxes. 8) Be prepared at an annual review to be flexible about hours of work. Some people prefer to begin their work day at 6:00 am and time away from the office for personal matters. One of the biggest perks I enjoy myself, as an entrepreneur and business owner, is that I can set my own hours. I can take off Thursday afternoon and come in on Saturday morning if I like. So I refuse to be a prison warden for my staff. They work with me to accomplish a mission, not to lose their freedom to visit a doctor when they need to, or watch their daughter’s soccer finals. When I improve as a manager, my co-workers improve at their positions. That is why I no longer dread reviewing them, because, in reality, we are helping each other. Let’s take the word “Dreaded” out of the annual performance review. Why dressing for work at your home office is important

Why dressing for work at your home office is important Why dressing for work at your home office is important There’s no question that working from home is something of a dream for many. You get to set your own hours, your own workload and the ways in which you work. Your home is comfortable, you get to eat all of the food groups you like and take three-hour lunches. Best of all you can roll out of bed when you like and make money in your pajamas. It all sounds great, but actually, the above is not necessarily true. As anyone who has actually worked from home for any substantial length of time knows, the biggest challenge home workers face is the never-ending attempt to maintain productivity. You don’t always get to set your own hours, your comfortable home is not an office and, most of all, working in your pajamas is likely to damage your productivity and your confidence. With this last point in mind, it is worth considering a few reasons why you should dress for work, even if you work from home. Ultimately, you’ll soon see that how we dress influences everything in how we work at home. The fine line between work and lifeOne of the reasons many choose to work from home is irritation of sometimes working after hours at a traditional workplace. We want to be at home amongst our family, friends or simply away from the stress of a workplace. But that line between work and life can follow you home as well, especially if you don’t find a way to delineate between the two.“Working in your pajamas may seem like fun for a couple of days, but you’ll soon find any productivity wanes,”  writes Joshua Duvall, an author at  Researchpapersuk  and  Last Minute Writing,  â€œOur bodies appreciate the comfiness of our bed wear, and consciously or unconsciously, our minds react to this comfortability by shutting down the practical parts of our brains.”Without actually dressing up for work, you no longer have these moments to condition your brain into understanding when work ends and home life begins.A boundary for ourselvesBeyond our ability to switch off once we are changed into our relaxing clothes, changing into work clothes for our home office promotes and maintains a professional attitude. We cannot forget that when we work from home, we are still at work. This may mean that we have to engage with our clients, line managers or colleagues. We have to recognize that in order to approach our work professionally, we have to maintain a professional attitude. There’s an argument that our clothes make more of a difference in this respect than anything else.In dressing professionally we allow ourselves control over our attitude. In addition, we signal to others, be it family, friends or even the postman, that we are at work, and our interactions will retain a professional air.Promotes productivityMost importantly, this professional attitude forces us into a mode of productivity. This is the most important reason for dressing appropriately for work. It is nice to be comfortable, but as we’ve seen, comfortability doesn’t necessarily mean productivity. Productivity is the lifeblood of maintaining a work-from-home lifestyle. In dressing for work, we are affirming to ourselves a commitment to actually do the work. Our clothes work as a visual reminder to ourselves of our intentions to get things done. For homeworkers, anything that helps us to overcome low productivity is a blessing.A boundary for othersNot all of us have the opportunity to work from home without interruption. Many turn to working from home for a variety of commitments, such as child-care, health issues or even difficult commutes. This means that we have to utilize every weapon in our arsenal to keep interruption to a minimum. For parents, it is especially important that our kids know we are ‘out-of-bounds’. Kids, especially young ones don’t necessarily understand boundaries without a visual clue. Much like the boundaries we set ourselves when dressing for work, a suit, a shirt, or even just smart casual wear sets a visual distinction between us ‘at home’ and us ‘at work’.If we don’t have kids, there is a likelihood that there are others we need to remind about our work-life at home. These may be parents, friend s, housemates, or even sales callers. All should respond to our work clothes with the respect we deserve.Feeling fresh and cleanAside from the psychological usefulness of wearing professional clothes to our home office, there is a further psychological benefit. One of the great difficulties of working from home is that, actually, it can lead to mental health issues. It is often a lonely, solitary existence which can result in a disconnectedness from society at large. We interact with our computers and only text when it comes to interacting with people. If we aren’t careful we can deteriorate into bad hygiene and a lack of confidence which can lead to bad work. We should, therefore, understand that wearing professional clothes are instrumental in keeping us grounded in reality.“If we aren’t dressed to face the world, there’s little chance that we can actually face the reality of work,” says Veronica Dodson, a regular contributor to Draftbeyond and Writinity, “Dress appropr iately to go out or dress appropriately to visit friends or receive visitors and you limit the potential for self-destructive behavior in working from home.”The above reasons are not an exhaustive list of reasons why you should remain professionally dressed when working from home. However, this article has shown some of the fundamentals of why it is important on a psychological level. We should always remember that working from home is working, regardless of how phony it may feel at times.Ultimately, though, how we dress is an important psychological factor in maintaining confidence and good mental health. We may feel at times that stress levels are much higher for office workers. But working from home, too, has its stresses and difficulties, and dressing well helps to guard us against them. This article was originally published on Your Coffee Break.
